Turning Point HouseTurning Point House, a 21-bed male facility located in rural Eden N.Y., opened in 1990 to serve individuals who have numerous recovery attempts from substance related disorders. The goal of this treatment modality is to cope with life experiences without the aid of substance use through cognitive-behavioral, didactic, and expressive therapies.

This residential model is based on the belief that "trauma" is manifested through symptoms that can and do result in addictive behaviors. Specific treatment objectives are focused on anger management, coping skill development, life trap identification, and rational thought development. Each resident will be offered weekly individual sessions and a schedule of group therapies set up to address their personal needs. Didactic therapies focus on learning about the effects of co-occurring issues, trauma, and skill development. Expressive therapies offer the residents the opportunity to identify and express their emotions through healthy adaptable behaviors. Cognitive therapies allow the residents to identify personal conflicts and challenge distorted beliefs related to life scripts, trauma and interpersonal relationships.

Admission and discharge criteria is modeled after the American Society of Addiction Medicine Patient Placement Criteria for treatment of substance related disorders (Dual Diagnosis Enhanced Level III.5 Clinically Managed High-Intensity Residential Treatment). The average length of stay for successful treatment completion is 6-9 months. This experience is divided into a phased structure that allows each resident to move through the treatment experience at a progressive pace.

Social support is an important component in the recovery process. Turning Point House is proud of relationships that have been built with the local self-help community. Self-help meetings are hosted on-site, and transportation is provided to attend local self-help meetings.

The staff at Turning Point House is comprised of Qualified Health Professionals, addiction counselors, case managers and support staff. This model believes that all team members need to have a basic understanding of issues related to addiction, co-occurring disorders, trauma and criminal justice.
