Deone is rebuilding his life after years of battling substance use disorder, navigating homelessness, and facing moments that nearly broke him. This story is a powerful reminder that recovery is not linear. It’s a journey filled with setbacks, breakthroughs, and constant learning. While this journey may seem like a series of unfortunate events, Deone’s story is one of tenacity, strength, and the relentless pursuit of self-discovery. Through it all, Deone remains unyielding in his pursuit of a life filled with purpose, creativity, and, above all, hope.
Deone’s Descent and the Catalyst for Change
It wasn’t always this way. Deone’s descent into substance use began in late 2017, spurred by a mix of emotional pain and curiosity. “I had feelings for someone who didn’t feel the same, and in a moment of hurt, I made a decision that changed everything,” Deone recalls. That decision was to try crack cocaine—a drug that is laden with stigma, especially within the Black community. “There’s this image of a crackhead, and I didn’t fit it, so I convinced myself I was different,” he says. But this disorder doesn’t discriminate, and it wasn’t long before Deone found himself caught in its grip.
Over the next few years, Deone’s life unraveled. He lost jobs, strained family relationships, and began distancing himself from the person he once was. Despite these struggles, Deone held onto a belief that he could get better, even if he wasn’t quite ready to fully commit. His journey through various rehabilitation programs taught him hard lessons about recovery, most notably that true change only happens when you’re truly ready. “I thought rehab was a magic fix,” Deone admits, “but I learned that no one can save you if you’re not ready to save yourself.”
Finding Direction and Stability Through Recovery
Deone’s turning point came in late 2021. With debts piling up and facing threats from dealers, he knew he had to escape not just his surroundings but the mindset that kept pulling him back. This time, his path led him to a 28-day program at Horizon Health, where he found more than just sobriety—he found direction. From there, he entered Caz Recovery, where he began to confront the deeper issues behind his substance use disorder.
Recovery wasn’t easy. Deone faced challenges at every turn—unsafe environments in different housing situations, long waiting lists for most rehab programs, systemic barriers to stable housing, and the ongoing battle against cravings and self-doubt. “The process was exhausting,” Deone shares, “but each step forward, no matter how small, reminded me that I was capable of more.” Support from peers who had faced similar struggles made all the difference. “Talking to someone who’s walked in your shoes gives you hope in a way that lectures never could,” he says.
A New Chapter: Turning Pain into Purpose
In November 2022, Deone finally found stability. He moved into our supportive housing program and began laying the groundwork for his future. Today, he’s employed at Recovery Options Made Easy, where he helps others navigate their personal mental health challenges. But Deone’s ambitions extend beyond his day job. A natural storyteller, he’s channeling his experiences into content creation, building a presence on TikTok and exploring the possibilities of faceless content creation. “I love the idea of sharing stories and helping others without being defined by my past,” he explains.
Deone’s story is one of transformation, not just in his circumstances but in his mindset. His journey through substance use disorder has given him a unique perspective on life, one that drives him to push forward even when the road is difficult. The loss of his younger brother, who passed away suddenly last year, serves as both a painful reminder and a motivator. “He was only 30 and had so many plans,” Deone reflects. “It made me realize that life is short, and I can’t waste mine.”
With the support of his family and the insights gained from his recovery, Deone is determined to build a life he’s proud of. He acknowledges that the road ahead won’t be easy, but he’s ready for whatever comes next. “I’ve learned that setbacks don’t define you—how you respond to them does,” he says. And for Deone, that response is clear: keep moving forward, keep creating, and never stop believing in what’s possible.
As he continues to grow and evolve, Deone’s story reminds us that recovery isn’t just about staying “substance-free”—it’s about rediscovering who you are, redefining what you’re capable of, and reclaiming the life you deserve.
