Michael’s Inspiring Journey

Michael’s journey with Caz Recovery is nothing short of remarkable. Starting as a program participant himself, he transitioned through Caz’s Reintegration programs, finding stability and purpose, before joining the Housing team as a Harm Reduction Specialist. Reflecting on his journey, Michael shared, “Having been in their shoes, I know what it’s like to ask for help. My role is to empower people to see the possibilities in their future and help them take steps to achieve their goals.” Michael’s lived experiences have fueled his dedication and empathy, enabling him to connect deeply with the people he serves. From assisting with housing needs to providing emotional support, Michael’s work is centered on meeting our residents where they are in their journey and helping them build a brighter future. “Recovery looks different for everyone,” he explains. “My job is to guide them as they define their own path, supporting them every step of the way.”

Transforming Lives Through Harm Reduction

In his current role, Michael supports 19 individuals across several of our housing programs funded by the NYS Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS), including Permanent Supportive Housing and Transitional Safety Units (TSUs), as well as the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). His approach is holistic, addressing not just recovery goals but also broader needs like budgeting, food security, and emotional well-being. “It’s about more than just housing—it’s about building hope and confidence,” Michael says.

Michael is particularly passionate about the TSU program, which helps participants save money and prepare for independent living. “This program has so much potential,” he shares. “With the right guidance, participants can build a nest egg, learn to budget, and step into the future with stability and confidence.” His dedication doesn’t stop at formal duties. Michael often volunteers his time to deliver food, assists with furniture donations, and connects participants with community resources. “I’ve been there—hungry, cold, and unsure of where to turn. I know how hard it is to ask for help, and I want to make that process easier for others.”

A Well-Deserved Recognition

The Unsung Hero Award is a testament to Michael’s tireless efforts to empower those facing homelessness and addiction. When asked about the award, Michael humbly credits his team. “This isn’t just about me—it’s about the collective effort of everyone at Caz Recovery who works tirelessly to make a difference. I’m proud to be part of an organization that believes in meeting people where they are and helping them build hope for a better future.” Michael’s commitment to the harm reduction model and his ability to connect with people on a human level sets him apart. “Making people feel like a person—not a number or a case file—is one of the most important things we can do,” he says. “That’s what I strive for every day.”

The Unsung Hero Award ceremony is not just a celebration of Michael but a reminder of the incredible work being done at Caz Recovery. His story inspires us to continue making a difference and spreading hope in our community.
