James’ journey is a powerful example of the work we do here at Caz Recovery and the residents’ resolve in overcoming challenges in the face of overwhelming adversity. From battling substance use that gripped him in his youth to enduring the emotional and physical toll it took on his closest relationships, every phase of James’ recovery has been a hard-won victory. His story isn’t just about survival—it’s a reflection of how transformation comes through vulnerability, strength, and unwavering courage.
The Early Years
James grew up like many of his friends, experimenting with substances at a young age. “We started young on opiates,” James recalls. “One of my closest friends had terminal cancer, and when he was prescribed painkillers, a group of us got hooked. After he passed, it felt like everything spiraled out of control.” Despite attempts at sobriety and a brief period of being substance-free for over two years, James found himself having a recurrence of use. “Heroin and crack cocaine really took over my life when I was about 27. From there, everything just went downhill,” he says, reflecting on that dark period.
A Father’s Love and a Life-Changing Decision
During these years, James’ family, particularly his father, stood by him, even when things became unbearable. “I was living with my dad, and it got really bad between us. My addiction was killing me, and it was killing him too,” James shares. His father’s declining health became a wake-up call for James. “He started having heart attacks because of the stress, and I knew I had to get sober before I lost him.” After multiple attempts at rehab and several setbacks, James made a life-altering decision. “I had to do it for him, but I also had to do it for me,” he says. That decision led James to a hospital recovery program, where he became the first patient in their new initiative. “That was the start of everything changing for me.”
Finding Strength in Step Toward Success
James’ journey took him through several recovery programs, including Horizon Village and Unity House, where he found strength in community and structure. “I loved Unity House,” he says. “They made me president of the house, and it gave me something to focus on other than my addiction. I needed that responsibility.” From there, James transitioned into Caz Recovery’s Step Toward Success program, where he’s spent the last four months. “[It] has been incredible. The staff are always there for you, whether it’s helping with job searches or just checking in on how you’re doing,” James says. “I’ve never felt alone here.” His next step? Moving to Garden Lofts, where he will have his own apartment and even more independence. “I’m ready for it,” he says confidently. “It’s all about growing, step by step.”
Rebuilding Relationships and a New Purpose
James has not only rebuilt his life but also mended his relationships. One of his greatest accomplishments has been his relationship with his father. “We’re better than ever now,” he says with pride. “When I’m not working, I’m helping him with his health. I get to give back to him for everything he did for me.” Looking forward, James is determined to continue improving his life. “I want to go back to school and finish my degree. I’m thinking about getting into counseling because I want to help others like me,” he says.
Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Milestones
One of the most significant milestones in James’ recovery has been securing steady employment. After several months of searching, he found a job at Tops, working overnight shifts. “I’ve been there for almost two months now,” James says proudly. “It feels good to have a routine, to be able to save money, and not be afraid to check my bank balance for the first time in my life.” In addition to financial stability, James has made strides in improving his physical health. “I finally took care of my teeth. That’s been a big deal for me,” he shares. “I still have more work to do, but I’m getting there.”
“You Can Do This!”: James’ Inspiring Message to Take the First Step
For James, the journey to recovery has been long, but he remains hopeful and determined. His advice for others who are struggling? “Don’t wait. There might not be a tomorrow. If you want to change, make that call today. It’s not going to fix itself, but you can do it.” Through the support of Caz Recovery, his family, and his unwavering will, James is living proof that no matter how dark things get, there is always hope for a better future. “I pushed it off for too long, and I’m just blessed I made it through. Now, I’m ready to keep going. I have plans, and I know I’ll get there.”
