Angie was born into a turbulent childhood, facing hardships early on, including the loss of her biological father before birth and complex family dynamics. Despite these challenges, she carried on with strength and resolve.

Angie’s struggles began in her teenage years when she started drinking and experimenting with marijuana as a way to cope with the pain of unresolved trauma and family upheaval. Her substance use escalated over time, fueled by abusive relationships and a series of painful events. “At first, drinking numbed the pain,” she recalls. “But it spiraled into something much bigger.” Over the years, Angie turned to stronger substances, including methamphetamine, and later, crack and heroin, as she became entangled in unhealthy relationships and environments. Her world grew darker, leading her to lose her home, her independence, and even her connection with her son.

In 2023, after years of turmoil, Angie took her first steps toward recovery. Her turning point came when she decided to confront her struggles head-on, enrolling in a rehabilitation program that gave her the tools and support she needed to rebuild her life. “I finally realized I had to make a choice: life or death,” she reflects. “I chose life.” While reflecting on her experience at Caz Recovery and Casa Di Vita, Angie states, “It gave me a safe and supportive space to rebuild my life. With access to counseling, group meetings, and resources, I learned how to manage my emotions, set boundaries, and truly focus on my recovery.”

Angie’s recovery journey has been marked by incredible milestones. She successfully completed a long-term recovery program and graduated from drug court without any sanctions. She also took significant steps to improve her health, including completing extensive dental work that had long been neglected. “For the first time in years, I can smile with confidence,” she says.

Today, Angie is embracing a fresh start. She recently moved into her own apartment—a symbol of her hard-earned independence and a new chapter of stability. Her son plays a pivotal role in her life, providing her with a source of joy and motivation. Angie is also pursuing her passion for caregiving, attending classes to explore a career in healthcare as a home health aide.

What sets Angie apart is her newfound confidence and ability to set boundaries—skills she honed during her recovery. “I’ve learned to say no and stand my ground,” she shares. “For the first time, I have a backbone.”

As the holidays approach, Angie looks forward to reuniting with her son in her new home. “This year, I’m cooking Thanksgiving dinner. It’s been so long since I’ve had the chance to do something like that,” she says, smiling. Angie’s story shows the power of perseverance and self-belief. Her message to others considering recovery is simple but profound: “When you’re ready, the resources are there. Recovery works if you’re willing to commit to it.” As Angie continues to heal and grow, her story serves as an inspiration to anyone facing their own battles. It’s a reminder that even in the face of adversity, a brighter tomorrow is always within reach.
