Working as a Counselor at Caz Recovery is more than just a job – it’s a journey of compassion, dedication, and transformation. At the heart of substance use recovery, Counselors play a pivotal role in guiding our residents toward living a healthier lifestyle, offering unwavering support, and fostering an environment of healing and hope. Michael Pollina, Counselor at Turning Point House, sheds light on the unique and rewarding experience of being a Counselor at Caz.

A Compassionate Approach to Recovery

At Caz, our Counselors embody a compassionate, trauma-informed approach to recovery. Their primary mission is to provide individuals struggling with substance use disorder a safe and nurturing space to heal. Every day, our Counselors cultivate relationships built on trust and empathy through listening to the stories of residents without judgment, recognizing that each journey to recovery is unique, and working alongside our residents to accomplish their goals. Michael embodies these skills and expressed this compassion throughout the interview, stating, “I always knew I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives, and working at Caz has allowed me to do just that. Every day, I witness the incredible strength and resilience of our residents as they work towards their recovery goals.”

Michael is fairly new to Caz but has worked in recovery since 2015. Prior to joining our team, he worked in outpatient treatment, where he facilitated weekly counseling and group sessions. Michael now enjoys his role at Turning Point House where he has been a C

ounselor since January. “Now I’m seeing the guys every day. I’m able to really dig in deep with them, help them, and provide them with strategies to get through past traumas.”

A Passion for Person-Centered Care

One of the cornerstones of Caz’s approach is the development of personalized treatment plans. Our Counselors work closely with residents to identify their specific needs, struggles, triggers, and goals. Michael has leaned into the person-centered approach. He believes that understanding an individual’s unique life situation is essential in the recovery journey. “I’m very big on changing your behaviors to actions. There are consequences, whether they’re good or bad.” This person-centered approach helps people to make mistakes, see what outcomes might happen, and continue learning throughout their recovery.

A Holistic Approach to Healing

Counseling at Caz goes beyond therapy sessions and group meetings. Beyond traditional therapy, Counselors introduce residents to various therapeutic techniques, such as mindfulness, art therapy, and yoga. The Counselors have organized a number of events and outings for the residents, such as zip-lining, beach trips, and blueberry picking. These activities not only provide a fun and engaging experience for the residents but also serve as a form of therapy and self-care. Turning Point House has also been actively participating in activities to raise awareness for domestic violence. These activities allow residents to reinvest in the community. The goal is to empower the residents and equip them with the necessary tools and resources for successful recovery. These practices empower individuals to develop coping strategies, manage stress, and find inner peace without the use of substances.

Why Counsel at Caz?

Michael describes his experience at Caz as positive from the very beginning “Since I’ve been working with Caz, it has been such a blessing that I have such a great crew of people to work with. I just never worked at a place that was so caring about their staff. It’s always usually about the numbers.” Michael also appreciates the opportunity for personal and professional growth through trainings and the supportive interdisciplinary team at Caz. Counselors participate in training sessions, workshops, and seminars to expand their knowledge and skills. This commitment to growth ensures that the team can provide the best possible care to residents.
